Behind the Scenes: WNU Summer Campaign
Back in March (!) on a particularly sunny day we sat down in Marylebone, with Bloody Marys in hand, to brainstorm our Summer 18 campaign. Who was the face? What was the vibe? Who would we ask to shoot it?
Led by our Creative Director, stylist Sophie Pera, we were in no doubt that we wanted to use the same team as our Winter campaign; amazing Fabrizio del Rincon shooting and dream WNU woman Louise Follain fronting it. No harm in asking but I’m sure we couldn’t be that lucky twice we said… within minutes they’d both texted back – YES to season two !
Two weeks later we were at Gatwick, Ibiza bound.
2 days, a 5 man team, one 4x4 car and numerous locations – it wasn’t quiet to say the least!
Ibiza was the perfect backdrop to showcase versatility of the boyfriend-style WNU shirts - from city to coast and the journey between. We kicked off Day 1 in Ibiza Old Town, with its beautiful cobbled streets and worn balustrades it was the ideal spot for showing off the shirts ‘town style’. Suitcases, reflectors, 10 cameras and a prop kit in hand we changed down alleyways and in local bars – we found ourselves with quite the crowd of spectators by the end!
Then it was on to the beach – Es Cavallet is a must go for anyone visiting Ibiza. A stunning stretch of white sand with Hamptons style ropes and wooden huts; with our moodboard in mind, evoking icons such as Carolyn Bessette, so effortlessly cool at the Cape, the setting couldn’t have been better. Sophie styled Louise in some old baggy Levis and the sand dunes proved to be just the vision we were after. The heavenly El Chiringuito, another must visit, provided us with the best on-set catering we’d ever had – charcuterie and rosé galore !
The WNU shirts take you from boat to beach, sand to sundowners and with that in mind we rushed back for sundowners at our villa where Fabrizio captured Louise just as the sun was setting.
They say no rest for the wicked and Sunday proved a point. After one too many cocktails to celebrate at Paloma restaurant the night before the sun decided to come out and punish us for Day 2. Showing Ibiza at its best it was the ideal contrast to the moody day previously – blue skies and beautiful light. Fabrizio shot on a mixture of film and polaroid, bringing a grainy and easy coolness to the campaign.
We had heard of a fantastic local market in the North of the island so headed there to check it out, San Juan didn’t disappoint! Woven baskets and trinkets burst off stalls and the street food was spectacular – the best empanadas ever tasted. Vegetable sellers and local women loved Louise and she loved them, with Fabrizio capturing every interaction and candid conversation it proved to be another perfect chapter to the WNU story.
Beach bound once more, we headed to the north coast in search of more seascapes. Following the winding road round the Ibiza hills Sophie and Fabrizio pulled over and ad hoc shot Louise in the rocky ground and sparse terrain, the perfect contrast to the lush market and a wide open road evoking an amazing feeling of freedom.
Then back in the car we went, Louise playing DJ blasting her mega playlist and continued north until we hit the sea. A picturesque scape awaited us and Fabrizio once more switched between film and polaroid to capture Louise, perched on a rock with her WNU gently waving in the wind. Sequins were presented courtesy of Sophie and the sunbathing locals revelled in the sight in front of them.
With that the shoot was wrapped. We found a cute beachside restaurant and tucked into paella and sangria, the perfect way to toast the weekend, the dream team and the images created.
A special thank you goes to Sophie, our creative magician, without whom it wouldn’t be WNU.
